Matthew Briggs is new Golden Jaguars captain
Staff Reporter By Staff Reporter | June 1, 2021 Guyana's Matthew Briggs (#20) in action against Panama at the CONCACAF Gold Cup FORMER English Premier League defender, Matthew Briggs, has been named captain of the Guyana Senior Men’s National Team ahead of their remaining CONCACAF Group F, FIFA 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifiers. Matthew Briggs Briggs, who is signed to Vejle Boldklub in Denmark’s Superliga, the country’s highest league, first tasted International football for the Golden Jaguars in March of 2015 when he started against Grenada in Guyana’s 2 – 0 win at the Guyana National Stadium. Since then, he has made 13 more appearances for the Golden Jaguars, while finding the net just once, doing so in Guyana’s 4 – 2 win over Antigua and Barbuda in the CONCACAF Nations League. Guyana will play St Kitts and Nevis on June 4, followed by Puerto Rico on June 8. All matches will be played in St Kitts and Nevis. In accepting his new role, Briggs said “it’s always been a dream of mine to captain a national team, so I am thoroughly excited to get this journey started and to see what the future holds. We’ve got two games coming up and I hope we all give 110 per cent, like I know we will. We’ve got all the capabilities to go and win both of these games.” Briggs revealed the team’s excitement, noting that “going on the last camp, we didn’t perform to our full potential, which was disappointing for us, so we are excited to get into these two games now and put that right. We want to win both games. I look at both these games and I think we are favourites to win them. I think we will be the better team and we’ve got more than enough quality to win both of these games.” Meanwhile, the team’s Head Coach, Marcio Maximo, said Briggs was a natural choice to lead the team because of the professional example he set to the other players during matches and away from the field of play. President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Wayne Forde, lauded former captain, Sam Cox, for leading Guyana with passion and dedication in recent years. “Sam has been a great ambassador and warrior for Golden Jaguars. The whole nation is grateful for his service in leading Guyana to some of its greatest moments on the pitch, including reaching its first men’s CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019,” Forde said. The Golden Jaguars are currently in Antigua before departing for St. Kitts and Nevis on June 2 for their last two first-round matches. After a 3-0 loss against Trinidad and Tobago and 4-0 win over the Bahamas in March, Guyana lies in third place in Group F and requires favourable results elsewhere to reach the second round. Only the top team from each group will progress.

Dominica, Montserrat, Cuba and Aruba reel in WCQ winsPublished on 02 Jun 2021 / Updated on 02 Jun 2021 at 21:59 www.concacaf.com/world-cup-qualifying-men/article/dominica-montserrat-cuba-and-aruba-reel-in-wcq-wins/ MIAMI, Florida – World Cup qualification for Qatar 2022 resumed in the Concacaf region on Wednesday, as the First Round winds down to a thrilling conclusion next week. Dominica 3 Anguilla 0 The day kicked off in Group D with Dominica facing Anguilla, with a flurry of first-half goals giving Dominica its first World Cup qualification triumph since a 2015 win over the British Virgin Islands. Briel Thomas gave Rajesh Latchoo’s squad an early lead with a goal in the third minute. His strike was followed by a 34th goal from Chad Bertrand and another before the halftime break scored by Julian Wade. Anguilla was able to keep a clean sheet in the second half, with Dominica nabbing the 3-0 final. Montserrat will go to sleep atop Group A after a 4-0 victory over the U.S. Virgin Islands at the Estadio Panamericano in the Dominican Republic. While the Emerald Boys were pushing for a goal from the opening whistle, it didn’t arrive until Nathan Pond found the opener in the 39th minute. Rohan Ince added a second on the hour, and substitute attacker Adrian Clifton added a double with goals in the 66th and 83rd minutes. Montserrat now travels for an away date with Grenada on June 8, while the USVI close play by hosting El Salvador on June 5. Cuba nabbed its first victory of qualification, beating the British Virgin Islands 5-0 in a match that took place at the Estadio Doroteo Flores in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Forwards Luis Paradela, Onel Hernandez and Maikel Reyes, on as a substitute, scored the opening three goals before defender Cavafe got in on the party with an 80th-minute goal from a set piece. Cuba put the cherry on top with a final goal in stoppage time through Dairon Reyes and now turns its attention to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on June 8, while the British Virgin Islands will stay in Guatemala to meet Curacao. Joshua John’s double helped Aruba find its first victory since 2018, beating the Cayman Islands, 3-1, in Group B action. Aruba had the bulk of possession in the first half, but the Cayman Islands earned a penalty at the half-hour mark with Jonah Ebanks stepping up and putting it to the goalkeeper’s right to open the scoring. Aruba was looking for an equalizer from the spot five minutes later, but John sent his kick down the middle and it was saved by Cayman Islands GK Albertini Holness. John atoned for the miss though in the 40th minute when he had the ball at his feet atop the 18-yard area and smashed a shot into the back of the net from distance to tie the contest. It was 2-1 by halftime with Terence Groothusen getting the ball in the box, turning and finishing from close range. John then added another individual goal in the second half to help Aruba to its first World Cup qualification win since 2015.

Golden Jaguars FIFA World Cup dream ‘deferred’
Staff Reporter By Staff Reporter | June 5, 2021 The Golden Jaguars before kick-off against St Kitts and Nevis. (GFF photos) The Golden Jaguars before kick-off against St Kitts and Nevis. (GFF photos) …St Kitts and Nevis thump Guyana 3 – 0 THE Golden Jaguars’ dreams of advancing to the next round of their FIFA 2022 Qatar World Cup Qualifiers came to an end last evening when they went down 0 – 3 to St Kitts and Nevis. Playing at Warner Park Sporting Complex in Basseterre, Guyana entered the match needing a win to keep their chances alive. However, the home side had other ideas. Coach Marcio Maximo went Kai McKenzie-Lyle in goal, while Captain Matthew Briggs was joined by Liam Gordon, Terrence Vancooten and Miguel Scarlett at the back. Daniel Wilson and Watford FC’s Bali Spencer-Adams were placed in the defensive midfield; Pernell Schultz, Stephen Duke-McKenna and Omari Glasgow were placed in the attacking middle position. Keanu Marsh-Brown was the lone forward used by Maximo in his formation. For the home side, who came off of wins against Puerto Rico (1 – 0) and The Bahamas (4 – 0), they needed to ensure that they not only come out with the win, but also keep a clean sheet ahead of their crucial fixture against Trinidad and Tobago on June 8. Guyana and Queens Park Rangers midfield player, Stephen Duke-McKenna battles for the ball against St Kitts and Nevis. The Golden Jaguars trailed 2 – 0 at half-time with Keithroy Freeman scoring in the 9th minute from the penalty spot; he secured his double for the game in the 36th minute. However, to Guyana’s credit, they created a few chances of their own through Glasgow, Marsh-Brown and Duke-McKenna. West Bromwich Albion midfield player, Romaine Sawyers, put the icing on the cake for St Kitts when he converted in the 67th minute. With the win, St Kitts and Nevis are sitting atop the table with nine points from three games, while Guyana is only above The Bahamas on three points. Guyana’s lone win in the World Cup qualifiers came against The Bahamas (4 – 0). The Golden Jaguars will play Puerto Rico on June 8 in their final game of the qualifiers; a game that will have no consequence to the qualifiers. Guyana will return home and prepare for their CONCACAF Gold Cup Qualifier match against Guatemala on July 3 in Florida.

Tridents denied by late equaliser
Article by Anmar Goodridge-Boyce www.nationnews.com/2021/06/05/tridents-denied-late-equaliser/Tridents denied by late equaliserTeam Barbados warming up ahead of last night’s clash against the Dominican Republic. (Picture by Anmar Goodridge-Boyce) Social Share Barbados were heartbroken as hopes of advancing to the second round in the Concacaf FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers came to an end when a stoppage goal denied the Tridents a famous away victory at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium last night here in Santo Domingo. Niall Reid Stephen gave Barbados a first-half lead in the 44th minute but a late goal from Manny Rodriguez ensured the points were shared in an entertaining 1-1 draw on a cold and rainy night. Speaking to Saturday Sport in a post-match interview last night, Barbados head coach Russell Latapy said he was proud of the team’s performance but the draw felt like a loss. “The work rate was great. We are trying to develop and play to a philosophy and we were able to get the ball down and pass it for long periods of the game on a difficult pitch. We have a young team here and I feel that we didn’t see out this game but I am looking at the positives. We have come such a long way that the boys are disappointed because this game feels like a defeat, and for me as a coach that is tremendous.” (AGB)

Martin’s late strike lifts Mexico over Jamaica
Published on 03 Sep 2021 / Updated on 03 Sep 2021 at 04:30 www.concacaf.com/world-cup-qualifying-men/article/martin-s-late-strike-lifts-mexico-over-jamaica/MEXICO CITY, Mexico.- Mexico got goals from Alexis Vega and Henry Martin to beat Jamaica 2-1 on Thursday night at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The match was destined for a draw until Martin’s 89th-minute goal. The Club America forward ran onto a ball at the top of the box and sent a hard shot toward the top corner. While Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake got a hand to it, he couldn’t keep it out of the net. Mexico got on the board thanks to a Vega goal in the 50th minute. An attempted clearance by the Jamaican defense ricocheted off of another player and fell to Vega. The Mexico attacker took a few touches before he had a sight at goal and fired past Blake. Blake otherwise was excellent and able to keep his net clean, even on a clear-cut chance from Roberto Alvarado in the 63rd minute that the Cruz Azul man sent off the post and nearly got back, but couldn’t control. Shortly after, Jamaica made Mexico rue the missed opportunity by scoring a goal of its own. A hopeful ball forward toward Javon East was cut out by Mexico defender Jorge Sanchez, but his header fell into the path of Shamar Nicholson, whose left-footed shot surprised goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and went in to bring the score level. But Martin’s late goal made sure Mexico captured all three points, and El Tricolor now sit atop the table in the final round of Concacaf World Cup qualification for Qatar 2022 after one matchday. Jamaica now heads home where they’ll face Panama, while Mexico hits the road for the rest of the FIFA date, traveling to Costa Rica and later to Panama.

Canada, Honduras play to 1-1 draw in World Cup qualifier
By The Athletic Staff theathletic.com/news/canada-honduras-play-to-1-1-draw-in-world-cup-qualifier/kHtTmDy8TifS5 Comments Canada, Honduras play to 1-1 draw in World Cup qualifier. Canada is attempting to make its second World Cup and first since 1986. Canada and Honduras each scored via penalty kick and played to a 1-1 draw in a CONCACAF World Cup qualifying match on Thursday in Toronto. Honduras took a halftime lead when Alexander López scored following a Tajon Buchanan penalty in the 40th minute. But Canada got a penalty of its own early in the second half and Cyle Larin finished it to tie the game in the 66th minute. Canada held a massive possession advantage, holding the ball 65 percent of the game, but Honduras had six shots on goal to Canada's three. The game was the first of the third round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying, where eight teams will play 14 games (seven home, seven away) over the next seven months. The top three teams will qualify for the World Cup, while the fourth-place team will advance to an inter-confederation playoff game. Canada is attempting to make its second World Cup and first since 1986. It will travel to face the United States on Sunday in Nashville. Honduras, which reached the World Cup in 2010 and 2014, is attempting to return after missing the 2018 tournament. It travels to El Salvador for its next match on Sunday. United States held to draw by El Salvador in World Cup qualifying opener
play Sep 2, 2021 ESPN Facebook Twitter Facebook Messenger Pinterest Email www.espn.com/soccer/report/_/gameId/606096The United States played out a hard-fought draw against El Salvador in its first match of the Octagonal round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying in San Salvador on Thursday night. Tyler Adams wore the armband for the U.S., becoming the youngest player in the modern era to do so, while both Christian Pulisic and Zack Steffen were not with the team as they both recovered from setbacks. ADVERTISEMENT - Carlisle: Inexperience leads to faltering start on road to World Cup - CONCACAF World Cup qualifying fixtures and results | Latest table - ESPN+ viewers' guide: LaLiga, Bundesliga, MLS, FA Cup, more The teams traded headed opportunities in the opening 15 minutes with Gold Cup hero Miles Robinson of the U.S. and El Salvador's Ronald Rodriguez both sending efforts from set pieces narrowly over the crossbar. The U.S. grew into the tail end of the second half with Josh Sargent getting more involved in the Americans' attack, but neither team scored and the teams went to the break locked in a goalless draw. Goals continued to be impossible to come by for either side, and U.S. manager Gregg Berhalter made a trio of substitutes just past the hour mark, bringing on Jordan Siebatcheu, Antonee Robinson and Kellyn Acosta to try to jumpstart his team's attack. Weston McKennie flashed a header wide and Acosta's nodded effort came back off the bar and was smothered by El Salvador keeper Mario Gonzalez as the match approached the 80-minute mark. Neither team could find a winner and had to settle for a point, with the U.S. next in action in Nashville against Canada on Sunday. "All these games are going to be hard fought," Berhalter told reporters after the draw. "Anytime you go away from home, it's going to be a difficult game. Any intentions of us coming here and winning 3-0, it's going to be really challenging. Look at the other scores around CONCACAF, all the ties, Mexico winning in the 90th minute at home. Mexico led the way after the first round, picking up three points in a win over Jamaica, while the other three matches finished in draws. "They're dogfights and as much as I'd want to win this game, and we did want to win this game, I think that the attitude and the play was trying to win the game for the whole 90 minutes," Berhalter said. "We'll take the point and we'll move on. We know the next game is a home game against Canada followed by Honduras and we want to pick up points in those games." The U.S., trying to rebound from its failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, is ranked 10th, its highest since 2006, after winning the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup, and El Salvador is 64th. Los Cuscatlecos have reached just two World Cups, in 1970 and 1982, and the U.S. has 18 wins, six draws and one loss in the matchup, which includes an 18-game unbeaten streak (15 victories). The U.S. had won the most recent meeting 6-0 in an exhibition in December. Three of the eight nations in the regional Octagonal finals qualify for next year's World Cup in Qatar and fourth place advances to a playoff.

Panama thrash disjointed Reggae Boyz 3-0 in Kingston Featured
By Concacaf.com September 06, 2021 35 font size Print Email concaf.com www.sportingnews.com/us/soccer/news/concacaf-world-cup-schedule-standings-tv-soccer-octagon/16vwzinldq94u1l5ewa5b0mqagPanama stayed undefeated in the Final Round of Concacaf World Cup qualification for Qatar 2022 with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Jamaica on Sunday at Independence Park in Kingston. Panama now has four points after Sunday’s win and last Thursday’s opening 0-0 home draw versus Costa Rica, while Jamaica is still searching for its first point of qualification following Sunday’s result and Thursday’s 2-1 loss to Mexico. Panama opened the scoring in the 14th minute through an unlikely scorer. Center back Andres Andrade stepped into the centre circle and picked off a pass, but rather than find an attacker, he opted to dribble forward and fire off a shot before he got into the penalty area. The attempt surprised Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake, and Panama was off the mark, 1-0. Panama looked for a second in the 35th minute, with Jose Luis Rodriguez getting the ball in the box and looking to curl a shot past Blake, but the Jamaican shot-stopper had the shot in his sights and made the stop. Two minutes later, Rodriguez turned provider, putting in a cross of his own for Rolando Blackburn, whose header also ended up in Blake’s hands. But Blackburn used that as experience to double the lead in the 39th minute, beating Liam Moore to an Eric Davis cross and sending his header past Blake to give the Central Americans the 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break. Jamaica manager Theodore Whitmore made a pair of changes at halftime, bringing Junior Flemmings and Devon Williams into the contest and also made another pair of subs in the 73rd minute, including inserting Shamar Nicholson, who scored in the 2-1 loss to Mexico, for Michail Antonio, who made his Jamaica debut on Sunday. Jamaica had perhaps its best chance of the game in the 77th minute, with a shot from Nicholson forcing Panama GK Luis Mejia into action. But moments later, it was Panama on the counter-attack, and midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla played in Cecilio Waterman, who sent his finish past Blake to tie a bow on the victory for Panama. Jamaica closes out the window with a trip to Costa Rica, while Panama will put its undefeated record on the line against Mexico in Panama City.
