U.S., Cuba off to winning starts at CMU20

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras – The 2022 Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship in Honduras kicked off on Saturday with four matches in which the likes of the United States, Cuba and host nation Honduras all collected victories.
USA 10 Saint Kitts and Nevis 0
The day started in Group E at the Estadio Nacional in Tegucigalpa where the U.S. posted a 10-
0 victory against Saint Kitts and Nevis.
Seven different players found the back of the net for the reigning CMU20 champions, including
Nikolas Tsakiris (45+8’, 70’) and Paxten Aaronson (64’, 68’), who each scored a brace. Also
adding their names to the scoresheet were Cade Cowell (18’), Caden Clark (32’), Tyler Wolff
(44’), Rokas Pukstas (45+1’), Mauricio Cuevas (45+3’), along with an own goal from Jermaine
Chiuta (48’).
Cuba 1 Canada 0
The other match in Group E was a much tighter affair, as late first half goal from Cuba proved enough to down Canada, 1-0.
Kevin Martin was the hero for the Caribbean side when he pounced on a lightly hit back-pass from the Canadian defense and scored to give Cuba the three points.
Costa Rica 1 Jamaica 1
The day in Group H at the Estadio Morazan in San Pedro Sula started with Costa Rica and Jamaica playing to an entertaining 1-1 draw.
Dorian Rodriguez put the Ticos out in front 1-0 in the 58’ with a well-placed header. Jamaica looked set to get back on even terms in the 74’ when it had a penalty kick, but Costa Rica GK Bayron Mora came up with a massive diving save to keep the Costa Rica lead intact.
Just when it looked like Costa Rica would come away with the three points, Jamaica struck late
into second half stoppage time, with Jahmari Clarke calmly converting a penalty in the 90+8’ to salvage a draw for the Reggae Boyz.
Honduras 3 Antigua and Barbuda 0
The night ended with hist nation Honduras capturing a 3-0 victory over Antigua and Barbuda.
Aaron Zuniga broke the deadlock in the 31’, before Jefryn Macias doubled the advantage to 2-
0 in the 71’. Marco Aceituno then completed the 3-0 scoreline with a penalty conversion in the
84’ to seal the victory.

Trinidad and Tobago Under-20s face Haiti at Concacaf Champs
NEWSDAY REPORTER 12 HRS AGO The TT Under-20 footballers train ahead of the 2022 Concacaf Under-20 Championships being held in Honduras. - TTFA Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 men’s footballers will begin their quest for qualification to the 2022 FIFA Under-20 Men’s World Cup when they come up against Haiti in the first game of a Concacaf Champs double header at the Estadio Morazan in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, from 6 pm TT time, on Sunday. Fellow Group F teams Mexico and Suriname will meet in the second game of the double header. TT head coach Angus Eve conducted his final session with the 20-man squad on Saturday at the Real Espana ground after training the previous day at the Rancho Tarra training pitch. TT had their official walk-through at the Morazan Stadium on Saturday morning as all four teams are not permitted to train on the surface before the matches in order to preserve it. “We’ve prepared for it. The boys have all dedicated themselves in the preparations and it’s about going out and trying to execute things on the day,” Eve said. “The commitment has been there and of course, we are aware that no game in this tournament will be easy.” Team captain Molik Khan said, “I think we are focused on the task and we know what is required. The coach has instilled into us that hard work and sacrifice is what will get us through along with our skill and proper application.” Defender Jarron Pascal arrived at the camp on Saturday afternoon after staying back in San Jose, Costa Rica to sit a CAPE examination. Sunday’s match will be the first-ever CMU20 encounter between the two nations, as Trinidad & Tobago begin the quest for a third FIFA Men’s Under-20 World Cup, while Haiti are trying to qualify for their first. The competition kicked off on Saturday with group stage action among the top-ranked 16 teams. After group stage play the top three teams in each of the groups will advance to the round of 16, joining four teams which have already booked a spot in the round of 16 after performing at a high level at the 2022 Concacaf Championships Qualifying tournament. All knockout stage matches will be played in a single match elimination format, with the semifinalists (four teams) qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Men’s Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia and the finalists (two teams) for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games. The 2022 Concacaf Championships end on July 3.
