T&T to host Caribbean boxing championships Mark Pouchet Aug 28, 2019 1 min to read
Top boxing nation Cuba will be part of the 2019 Caribbean Boxing Championships to be hosted in Trinidad and Tobago for the first time since 2008.
And the TTBA (Trinidad and Tobago Boxing Association) is seeking corporate sponsorship to cover part of the $800,000 budget for the competition that will highlight the 70-year anniversary of the association.
The TTBA got the nod from the American Boxing Confederation and the Caribbean Boxing steering committee to host the December 4-9 competition that will punch off at the Pleasantville Indoor Sports Complex.
Cuba, the home of several world and Olympic champions, is one of four Spanish-speaking countries sending a delegation to this country.

Rivas set to face O'Neil in WBC clashGwendoline O’Neil to face Lorissa Rivas for WBC title T&T's boxer Lorissa Rivas is set to clash with veteran Guyanese fighter Gwendoline O’Neil for the vacant WBC heavyweight title, September 28 at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Saith Park in Chaguanas. Rivas, 37, who resides in the United States has been on the comeback trail lately and has had two victories last year to jumpstart her return. Her clash with O'Neil, who is also known as affectionately 'Big Red' will be the first WBC female heavyweight clash to take place on local soil. At a press conference to announce Rivas' opponent for the fight, promoter Amanda Potts said O’Neil is no stranger to success, with a record of 19 wins, with seven by way of knock out, seven losses and two draws. "She has won many World titles for her country and she has been well awarded. Her government gave her a house, land and $5 million as a reward for her achievements," the young Potts, who has been following in the footsteps of her father Boxu Potts, said. She described O'Neil as a very dogged, in-your-face fighter, who will be a very formidable opponent, who has won many titles, such as WIBA Light Heavyweight World Title, WIBA Heavyweight World Title, GBU Heavyweight World Title and UBF heavyweight world title. She has also had the opportunity of fighting the likes of Laila Ali. "She is re-writing history just as George Foreman and Bernard Hopkins, fighting late in their careers. We can also make mention of Diana Nyad, a 64-year-old woman who swam from Cuba to Florida. So we have to respect these athletes when they go through the rigours of preparing their body and attempting to get in a ring to make their country proud," the junior Potts explained. Only recently Rivas and her team received the support of the office of the Prime Minister, through a handsome $75, 000. And Potts, so appreciative of the initiative, said she wants to repay with a win, however, he called on corporate T&T to come on board and make this historic victory happen. The fight will be the featured bout of the card. it will also include a clash between Prince-Lee Isidore and Emmanuel Herrera for the RBO International lightweight title as the co-main bout. Also on the card: Yuray Cisenero Precal will be up against Aron Williams: Kevon Diaz versus Leon Dover: Joel McRea facing Nigel 'Cow' Edwards and former T&T heavyweight champion Kertson Manswell up against Elvis de Jesus Garcia. According to Potts "We are aware from Rivas’ camp that O’Neil is a more difficult opponent than Annie Mazerolle. We have to change our game plan, as she’s going to be a much more busy fighter, and she’s going to give more angles. It is our knowledge she has been in training for the past year." Tagged in:

One of the more pathetic cards to come through TT in years. Rivas has had three fights in the last four years. Her last opponent had never won a fight. Somehow she has qualified for the a world heavyweight title fight. According to boxrec Neil is 50 years old. Has had two fights in the last four years. And hasn't fought in the last three? To his credit Herrera has been active having had eight fights in 2018/19 winning three. Leon Dover has only one victory in eight fight and hasn't fought in eight years. Garcia hasn't fought in 11 months but he did win all six of his fights in 2018. His opponent Manswell has had one fight in the last four years. And has only won one of his last eleven. It's a pity that the Government subsidised such rubbish. It would have been better to just have two pro fights, use the money saved to pay for better quality fighters and have amateurs on the undercard. I assume there are no boxing journalists in TT to let this shit go unabated.

Trimmed down boxing team wings out for Caribbean Boxing Championships guyanachronicle.com/2019/12/05/trimmed-down-boxing-team-wings-out-for-caribbean-boxing-championshipsTHE Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) team left with 13 boxers yesterday to compete in what is expected to be a challenging 2019 Caribbean Boxing Championships, scheduled for Trinidad and Tobago from last night to December 9. Initially, GBA had named a team of 21 boxers and four officials, but a lack of funding forced them to trim the squad, led by renowned coaches Terrence Poole and Sebert Blake. Support came from the National Sports Commission, firstly with $500 000 then on Tuesday with a cheque for an additional $500 000. John Fernandes Group of Companies also played a major role. According to president of GBA, Steve Ninvalle, some $5M was needed to carry the original squad. Leading the charge in Trinidad and Tobago would be arguably Guyana’s best amateur boxer Keevin ‘Lightning’ Allicock, who told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday from the Twin Island Republic that he is all set. “I AM READY TO DO IT BIG”Allicock is one of several Caribbean medal winners in the side. The current bantamweight champion is joined by Caribbean Middleweight champion ‘Dynamic’ Desmond Amsterdam, former Lightweight Champion Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis and former Middleweight silver medallist Dennis Thomas. Guyana’s top teenage female boxers, the Jackman sisters, Abiola and Alesha, are making their first overseas trip. Alesha will battle in the Elite Junior Flyweight (49kg) division and her older sister Abiola in the Welterweight (69kg) division. The other boxers are Mark Crawford (Youth Lightweight), Richard Howard (Youth Bantamweight) Julius Kesney (Bantamweight), Daren France (91kg Heavyweight), Kevin Hunte (Super Heavyweight), Emanuel Pompey (Middleweight 75kg) and Kevin McKenzie (Welterweight). Some 21 nations are set to battle at the championships, including powerhouse Cuba, who have produced several World and Olympic champions. This would be the first time that Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic are expected to send boxers to the event and they are expected to make an impact.

CA/Images T&T's Stephon Cox, Trevor Barrett and Stephanie Lazar were the only winners for T&T on the opening day of the Caribbean Boxing Championship at the National Cycling Centre (NCC) at Balmain Couva on Thursday. Cox, one of many rising talents for T&T in the sport, first defeated Lemar Tull of Barbados on points for his first victory in a regional novice contest while Lazar made light work out of Guyana's Ocean Daniellys, also on points. And in the other TT bout, Barrett whipped Allan Charles of Grenada on points. Despite fielding its largest contingent in a regional tournament, yesterday's action was dominated mostly by other Caribbean fighters, all attempting to use the competition as a warm-up ahead of next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. In a light welterweight contest Antigua's Ryan Alston defeated Nathan Farrari of St Lucia by walk-over and Colin Lewis of Guyana prevailed over Cuba's Jorge Moiran from the points of two judges. Joshua Frazer who wore the red jersey in his welterweight clash with Kevin Mc Kenzie of Guyana, showed his superiority in the fight, winning on points, while Barbados' Kiomel Miller got the better of Jonathan Hanson of Jamaica, again by points scored by the judges in a middleweight clash. Hunte advances to semis; Amsterdam, Lewis lose guyanachronicle.com/2019/12/06/caribbean-boxing-championship-2Kevin Hunte was Guyana’s lone victor on the opening night. GUYANA’S superheavyweight champion Kevin Hunte stormed to a first-round victory on the opening night of the Caribbean Boxing Championships in Trinidad and Tobago, but the defending champions lost three bouts. With several top nations, including powerhouse Cuba in the championships, defending the title looks to be an uphill task for Guyana. It showed with current Caribbean middleweight champion, Desmond ‘Dynamic’ Amsterdam, and former Caribbean lightweight champion Colin ‘Superman’ Lewis going down in their opening bouts. Along with the champion pair, Kevin McKenzie also lost when he battled against Jamaican Joshua Fraser in a welterweight bout. All three of our defeats were via points. National coach Terrence Poole told Chronicle Sport that he was surprised with the decision in Amsterdam’s fight. “The judging was terrible for the Amsterdam bout.” Amsterdam, who was imposing en route to the national middleweight title last month at home, lost to Grenadian Triston Brookes. Brookes, however, lives in Canada, where he has become a dominant name. In fact, he won Canada’s middleweight national title in 2017 and again this year. Brookes also won the WBA and IBF amateur titles last month, when he represented the Eddie Melo Legacy Organisation at the prestigious and coveted fourth annual Willie Pep Invitational, hosted in East Windsor, Conn. Despite the Grenadian conquests, Amsterdam reportedly dominated their clash so much so that when the split decision was announced it baffled the Guyanese side and according to president of the Guyana Boxing Association Steve Ninvalle our officials later protested. “They did an official protest, but were advised by the ITO (International Technical Officer) that the protest had to be done while the referee was in the ring, because once the referee is out of the ring you can’t protest – which is something fairly new.” Lewis faced off against Cuban boxer Jorge Moiran and he also lost on points against the seasoned fighter. Guyana’s triple champion boxer (Novice, Intermediate and Open) for 2019, Hunte, was able to overpowered Grenadian Andy Andall with some power punches in round one of their +91kg clash to advance to tonight’s semi-finals, where he is scheduled to face home fighter Nigel Paul. Andall was no walkover; he had represented his island at the 2019 International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Boxing Championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia in September, but the Guyanese was too daunting in their clash. Paul is also experienced. He represented the Twin Islands Republic at the 2016 Olympics. Last night Alesha Jackman, one of two female Guyanese boxers at the meet, was scheduled to be in action. The amazingly talented Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) boxer was set to fight against home team boxer Sharika Elias in the Youth Women Novice 64kg battle. Howard Richard was also scheduled to meet Trinidadian Nyrell Hosein in a Youth bantamweight clash, while another 2019 Guyanese triple champion Daren France was set to face Grenadian Dariel Sylvester in a heavyweight (91kg) clash.

Guyana finish third at Caribbean Boxing ChampionshipsEight of the nine medal winners in Trinidad yesterday afternoon. Allicock and Abiola Jackman win gold medals on final nightguyanachronicle.com/2019/12/10/guyana-finish-third-at-caribbean-boxing-championshipsGUYANA finished third at the 2019 Caribbean Boxing Championships after winning nine medals against a tough field of boxers in Trinidad and Tobago over four nights of competition, which concluded on Sunday evening at the National Cycling Centre (NCC) at Balmain, Couva. Trinidad and Tobago, which had a field of 25 boxers, are the new champions, while Barbados just pipped Guyana by a single point to place second. Some 17 nations, including powerhouse Cuba, participated in the championships. Guyana had initially selected a team of 21 boxers, but funding only allowed for 13. Nine of them won medals. Sisters Alesha and Abiola Jackman and defending Caribbean bantamweight champion, Keevin Allicock, led the charge with three gold medals. Three other boxers finished with silver medals, including Dennis Thomas, who became a two-time Caribbean middleweight silver medallist. Thomas lost to US Virgin Islands’ boxer, Deion Pruitt via points. Keevin Allicock (centre) defended his bantamweight title at the regional championships. National Open best junior boxer, Mark Crawford, also lost in the final when he tackled 2018 Caribbean Junior Welterweight champion, Blessing Waldropt from T&T, in the Youth Lightweight 60kg division. Jullius Kesney also went down to Bajan boxer, Jabali Breedy, in a bantamweight battle. The bronze medal winners were Kevin Hunte, Josh Howard and Daren France. Emanuel Pompey did not get a chance to fight after Barbados decided to pull out their boxer from the competition. The middleweight (75kg) boxer had opted to drop down to 69kg to compete. Meanwhile, there were several strange decisions by the judging panel, which forced Guyana to protest two of the decisions. DOMINANT SISTERS After 15-year-old Alesha Jackman had won gold on Saturday night, it was her 17-year-old sister’s turn on Sunday evening. The East Ruimveldt resident was able to display her superior boxing skills against local girl Kinesha Clarke. Abiola, who attends the Business School (on a scholarship), used a combination of punches to stop her older opponent in one minute and 30 seconds into the first round of their Women’s Novice Division 69Kg final. Allicock, who was Guyana’s trump card, lived up to expectation when he dominated his USVI opponent, Otoniel Ortiz in their bantamweight final. The Guyanese dominated the fight from the start with left hooks and right hands and focused body shots, which led to a unanimous victory. Team Guyana was scheduled to arrive back home last evening.
